IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Vayne Aurelius
Age: 17 (appearance & mentally) but he was actually created 3 years prior to the game events
Canon: Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis
Canon Point: after Muppy joins the workshop (the end of chapter 6)
Species: Artificial Mana/ homunculus (a being created with the use of alchemy)
Gender: male
Orientation: Vayne doesn’t seem to be romantically interested in anyone but since we see him getting married to Nikki in one of the endings, I’ll say hetero.

History:

Created by an alchemist called Theofratus, Vayne is an artificial mana capable of granting wishes. The alchemist created him for only one reason – because he wished to die. And thus, after being “born”, Vayne granted the wish of his creator, but the shock of killing him, caused Vayne to lose his memory and create another conciseness in his mind – the other Vayne, that would take care of the memory of his power.

Afterwards, not remembering anymore who he is or why he was there, Vayne made friends with a cat that belonged to this creator – a black cat named Sulpher. Every since then the two lived together alone in the mountains, far away from people.

...Until the day when Zeppel found him and told him that Vayne was the son of famous alchemist (Theofratus). Since Vayne had no memory of his supposed father and Selphur didn’t say much about him either, the boy simply took being the son of the alchemist as a fact. Invited by Zeppel he enrolled to Al-Revis Academy.

On his first day at the Academy, Vayne met Jess, his first new friend and later on the two were dragged into Flay’s workshop together with Nikki. From that point on the four of them (or, actually three, because Flay usually runs off somewhere and doesn’t visit the workshop most of the time, leaving all the work to Vayne and others) studied at the said workshop.

Later the new team members joined the workshop – Pamela got interested in it, because of Vayne; Roxis joined up because of the bet he lost; Anna got “recruited” by Flay after the start of the next new school year and lastly Muppy (who was at first mistaken to be an artifact) also join the group.

Whole this time Vayne didn’t seem to be interested in who actually was his father, until a reason as to why are they all study at Al-Revis was brought up by Jess. At that time Vayne found out he was supposed to be the son of Theofratus, but nothing else than that.

Personality:

Vayne was basically raised by a cat, far away from any civilization (with an exception of a town near the place he lived), and so he grew both withdrawn and dependant on his furry little cat-friend - Sulpher. His withdrawn attitude was also caused by the fact, that the people from the nearby town were always afraid of him. Because of that Vayne never had much contact with people, which shows greatly, especially at the beginning, when he only started to attend to the Academy. At first he’s rather timid and doesn’t know how to act around people, but as he makes friends, he becomes more comfortable at the Academy.

Yet even afterwards it still is obvious sometimes that he was isolated from people for a long time. Even in a conversation with his friends, Vayne can say things that can be considered strange or taken as an insult, despite the fact that it isn’t his intention to make someone angry. The good example for it is when he wants to compliment Pamela for her knowledge and he calls it “grandma’s knowledge”. Pamela of course thought he was referring to the fact that she spent a very long time in the school (since she was a ghost) and got mad at Vayne. Though such little misunderstandings doesn’t happened a lot, but they still do happen.

The effect of his isolation shows also with other little things, such as how he got interested in the school festival, because he had never seen one before and also how he didn’t know what a cotton candy is and was surprised to learn that it can be eaten.

Another thing is Vayne’s complete lack of assertiveness and his weak personality. Convincing him to do something is extremely easy and if the person will involve him in something, without even asking about his opinion, chances are he won’t really be mad at them. Sure, he’ll complain a little, but will agree in the end, thinking that he has other choice anyway. With this, even despite the fact that Vayne loves to have peace and quiet, his friends will talk him into some kind of trouble anyway.

And speaking of peace and quiet, Vayne is also a boring person that enjoys doing boring things, such as cooking (he seems to be good at making cakes) or sewing. Whenever he has free time, he’d rather just have some rest. Adventures are not for him either and the thought that he would have to stand up early everyday to do some kind of training (like Anna does) makes him feel tired. He really doesn’t have much energy to do things like that. He prefers to study when he has to, then rest when he has free time. It’s safe to assume that if it wasn’t for his friends, Vayne would be pretty much staying in the background not doing anything he doesn’t have to do. He really isn’t the type, that would sign himself up for a battle arena or go ghost hunting. But when his friends talk him into doing something, he’ll just do it... On a side note: even Vayne’s favourite colours are also kind of boring - they’re black and white.

But being a boring people, it’s only natural that Vayne is also serious about studying. Whenever someone (especially Jess) wants to add a possibly dangerous ingredient to the synthesis he tells them not to do it or warns them that it might be too risky. He’s also usually using the recipes he got or found, but of course, he still makes new ones or does changes in them, but tries to not make them too drastic. He would rather avoid any chances of making anything explode.

Vayne is humble about his skills. Even though he is pretty skilled alchemist and a good student, he usually says that he isn’t as good as everyone else, or that he doesn’t do as much as everyone. In everything he does, he has to point out that he wouldn’t be able to do that by himself. His self-esteem is pretty low as well.

But the lack of confidence as well as some sort of social skills that would allow Vayne to integrate better with people around him, the boy tries to fix with Sulpher’s help. He is very dependent on his friend and asks him for advice a lot, especially at the beginning of the game. It should be also noted that Vayne cares a lot about Sulpher and can’t imagine his life without the cat. This is best shown in later chapters, in which Sulpher starts to weaken (due to his old age). At that time Vayne slowly becomes desperate to find a cure for Sulpher’s “disease”. Sulpher’s death is what triggers Vayne’s powers as Mana, when he wishes to revive his friend.

Vayne powers are actually triggered a few more times before this event. He revives a dead tree that Tony burned, he defeats the Beast from the Dragon’s Grave and also frees a sealed Mana. But in all of this events he is not aware of his power, nor he suspects that he was the cause of what happened. But as the truth about him is revealed, he starts to be afraid of his own powers and decides that, for everyone’s sake it would be best if he disappeared.

Vayne cares dearly for all his friends and everyone from Al-Revis and if anything was to happen to them, he would rather sacrifice his own life than allow anything like this. Vayne really enjoys his stay at the Academy, as well as his time spent with everyone and even though they got him in a lot of trouble, it was always a lot of fun to him. And that’s why Vayne is afraid of becoming alone again. Before he tells everyone that he wishes to die before he causes harm to anyone because of his power, he confesses to them that he wants to disappear but it feels too lonely to disappear alone (which leads to a lot of trouble to everyone).

Another thing is that Vayne could never really blame anyone for anything for too long. In the end of the game he is seen worrying about Isolde, who tried to hurt him and his friends, yet Vayne is happy that the teacher is okay in the end. He is also usually seen asking people about their reasons for doing various things. He believes that one shouldn’t blame someone, before they hear out that other person’s story. It also applies to the moment, when Roxis tell him that he doesn’t know anything about him, at which Vayne replies “you don’t know anything about me, either”.

Though he isn’t the most eager person, Vayne is a good guy who would do a lot to help others.

Abilities:

-Alchemy
As an alchemist Vayne can synthesize various items.

-Sulpher:
Vayne can understand Sulpher thanks to their contract and his own Mana abilities. He can perform various skills with Sulpher becoming his weapon. In that form his right hand becomes a claw and he has a sword attached to his left arm. His weapons can change shapes.
+skill list:
・Valiant Claw - Deal damage with left arm's huge sword
・Massive Guard - Guard an attack in place of an ally.
・Einzelkampf - Extract more of Sulpher's power to do grand damage
・Analyze - Damage with left arm sword (effect – shows stats of the opponent)
・Eluding Thorn - Lash out an infinite number of thorns for little damage
・Jade Shift - Multiply self for more actions
・Chaos Devotion - Transform into a huge sword to do super damage
・Over Realm - Release Sulpher's power for 3 consecutive actions
・Blade Pillar - Deal damage with emerging swords at the enemy's feet
・Rising Pillar - Deal medium damage with an area of emerging swords
・Violent Pillar - Deal great damage with infinitely approaching swords

-Mana Abilities:
+being a Mana – as a Mana, Vayne can’t die of an old age.
+ wish - throughout the game Vayne is seen performing various miracles. He was able to bring people and plants (burned tree) back to life. At the point I’m taking him from he is unaware of this, so he won’t intentionally use this skill.

Other:

- At this point he believes he has an amnesia and is not aware that he is not human.
- He is the only person who understands Sulpher
- He’s good at studying and likes reading books.
- Prior to the game events his only source of knowledge was Sulpher and books in the cottage he lived in.

SAMPLES
First Person:

[Vayne has never seen a device like this before and it took him a while to figure out how it works. Somewhat uncertain he starts talking to the cell phone.]

Hello...? Can anyone hear me? [Then he mutters under his breath:] I hope this works...

[It feels so strange to be talking to this device.]

Sulpher, can you hear me? Is there... anyone from Al-Revis Academy here? I really don’t understand what’s going on, but... I need to find Sulpher and go back to the Academy.

[There is another pause before he speaks again.]

...Sulpher is a black cat. He’s my friend, so if anybody has seen him, please let me know!

[Vayne is getting worried about his little furry-friend.]

I hope he’s okay...

Third Person:

Vayne opened his eyes and blinked a few times seeing a clear blue sky above. His eyes widen and he shoot up, looking around. He should had been in his room in dormitory, but he wasn’t.

“Where... am I?”

To his great surprise the young alchemist was now in the middle of a lawn and from his spot he could see a street and a line of similar-looking houses. For a longer moment he was sure that this must be some kind of dream, but everything seemed so real.

How did he get here? Where is this place?

“...This is so weird.” Vayne said still looking at this strange place and when he didn’t get any response for his remark he realized that his cat-friend Sulpher is nowhere to be found.

“Sulpher?! Sulpher, where are you?!” It was such a shock to him! He had never thought that there would be a day when he would get separated from his friend. Now in mix of panic and worry he tried to search for the lost friend but to no avail.

Without Sulpher or anyone he knew, he felt lost and all alone in this strange place. Vayne disliked that feeling and wished he could just go back home, to the Academy. To his friends.

In search for Sulpher, Vayne realized that everything he had was gone: all the items, all the ingredients used for synthesis and even his handbook. Instead of that he had a ring of keys now. He kept staring at them – he didn’t have anything like this before! Where did they even come from? -then he read the sign that was written on the plastic key chain.

“Holy Heights?” Was that the name of this place? Vayne had never heard of it before, but then again there was so many things he still haven’t heard or read about. “...Home... away from home?”

Vayne sighed.

“...I rather to just go back home now.”

Without Sulpher and everyone he highly doubted he could ever call any other place “home”.
